Earthen Vessels Pottery
Back in 1982, Kevin began pursuing the arts at Central Tech Arts School in Toronto. This evolved into an apprenticeship type job, which included teaching night school courses in pottery. Thus began his lifelong career as a potter.
In 1992 Kevin and his new bride, Corina established
Earthen Vessels Pottery which they now operate from their home studio and store just ten minutes north of Durham, Ontario. It is here that they have become well known for Kevin's raku firing demonstrations at both, their Spring Open House and the Autumn Leaves Studio Tour. The store is open "regularly" from Tuesdays to Saturdays. (Best to call ahead Jan. to Mar.)
Though he loves to "play" with raku, Kevin's main focus is functional stoneware which is offered in several different glaze colours. Such items include mugs, teapots, butter dishes, garlic keepers etc. This wide range of glaze options and items such as their carved tea lights and hand sculpted "tree vases" have been the corner stones of his reputation as a potter with something for all discerning tastes.
Kevin also occasionally helps his lovely wife Corina who runs her parents farm nearby. With 50 sheep and a dozen cattle she has developed a clientele for naturally raised beef and lamb available late spring and early fall.
Recently Kevin has developed a gallery line of Raku he entitles the Augmented Series. These unique works of art are literally thrown with fire! Where Raku relies on the flame to 'paint' the colours in the glaze, this process of throwing with one hand inside as a torch outside dries a skin layer, cracking as it expands allows the flame to create an unpredictable texture and shape. The results are truly astounding and definitely unique!
