Cynthia Porter
Cynthia's Collage and Mixed Media paintings, which involve an intuitive and spontaneous approach to layering, are rich in colour and texture. The collage elements often include fragments of maps, letters, or dress patterns and are incorporated with a wax technique. Her unique work is primarily abstract with shapes and symbols that suggest a physical or spiritual journey. A Toronto art critic once described her series of "evocative map-based paintings" as a "subtle blend of the conceptual and the sensual." More recently her works on canvas have included abstract vessel shapes.
Formerly a commercial teacher in New Zealand, Cynthia obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario and a Fine Arts diploma from Georgian College School of Visual Arts and Design, since moving to Canada. She has worked as a visual artist for over twenty years from her studio in downtown Owen Sound. Cynthia is an active participant in the Grey-Bruce artistic and cultural community. A founding member of the Art Town Collective her studio is open to the public for specific events or by appointment. Her Collage and Mixed Media workshops at the Southampton Art School each summer are popular.
In addition to her Collage and Mixed Media paintings the Owen Sound Artists' Co-op have a large selection of Cynthia's greeting cards.
