Cynthia Porter

Originally from New Zealand, Cynthia has worked as an artist in Owen Sound for over twenty years. She obtained a Bachelor's degree from the University of Western Ontario and a Fine Arts Diploma from Georgian College School of Visual Arts and Design. Her art has been widely exhibited and is in many collections.

Cynthia's collage and mixed media paintings, which involve an intuitive process of layering, are rich in colour and texture. The collage elements often include fragments of maps, letters, or dress patterns suggesting a physical or spiritual journey or directions to follow in pursuit of a destination or goal. The frequent inclusion of wax in her work creates a unique surface and, as one art critic described her work, a "subtle blend of the conceptual and the sensual."

An active participant in the Grey-Bruce artistic community, Cynthia is a founding member of the Art Town Collective and her studio is open during its annual studio tour in Owen Sound. She is also an instructor at the Southampton Art School each summer.

In addition to her paintings the Owen Sound Artists' Co-op have a selection of Cynthia's original collage greeting cards.
