Diane Edwards

Diane Edwards is well known in our region for her outstanding work in marquetry. Marquetry is the art of inlaying variously coloured wood veneers in furniture, boxes or other objects. Diane also does a great deal of research with her veneers to develop unique colours and surfaces that are exclusive to her creations. Here is a recent interview with Diane about her work:

How did you get started in marquetry?

During a marquetry demonstration at a wood show, I realized that I could blend my interest in art with my love of wood. Until then, I had only thought of marquetry in its traditional use, not as another medium for original art.

What is it about marquetry you find so appealing?

Wood has an endless potential for experimenting and discovering new and individual approaches to design. I am especially interested in working with the natural grain patterns and light reflection of veneer to create unique shading effects in pictures.

What about future directions for your work?

I have had many requests for cremation urns, so I will be developing a series of the keepsake containers specific for this use. I would also like to make some small tables for games or ornamentation.
